Classic Toppings

Seasoned egg (or Marinated egg),Bean sprout salad,Menma (or Bamboo shoots)

What are Regional Ramen Varieties?

Regional ramen varieties refer to unique ramen styles that reflect the characteristics and culture of different areas in Japan. These ramen styles are born from the history, food culture, and social background of each region and often become beloved soul food for locals.

Characteristics of Regional Ramen

According to the Japan Ramen Association, to be considered a regional ramen, it must meet at least two of the following seven criteria:

  1. Has a proven track record of popularity in the area

  2. Has specific features, characteristics, or definitions

  3. Has a history of over 20 years since its origin

  4. Has recognition (e.g., branches in other prefectures or in Tokyo)

  5. Reflects the local "food culture" or "social background"

  6. Has a support group

  7. The menu name is set by public institutions such as local government

Examples of Japanese Regional Ramen

It's said that there are about 200 types of regional ramen throughout Japan. Here are some famous examples:

  1. Hokkaido:

    • Asahikawa Ramen

    • Kushiro Ramen

    • Muroran Curry Ramen

    • Hakodate Ramen

  2. Tohoku Region:

    • Kitakata Ramen (Fukushima Prefecture)
