1. Kanzoji Temple (Jurojin)
Jurojin is considered the god of longevity and good fortune. He is characterized by his elongated head and the staff he holds. He is a Taoist deity from China, said to be the incarnation of the Southern Pole Star.

2. Ioji Temple (Ebisu)
Ebisu is the god of prosperity in business and abundant harvests. He was originally the patron deity of fishermen. He is the only god of Japanese origin among the Seven Lucky Gods. He is characterized by holding a fishing rod in his right hand and a sea bream in his left hand.

3. Hoshouin Temple (Daikokuten)
Daikokuten is the god of wealth and career success, characterized by a large bag and a magic mallet. He is said to be a combination of Mahakala, an incarnation of the Hindu god Shiva, and the ancient Japanese deity Okuninushi.

4. Manpukuji Temple (Fukurokuju)
Fukurokuju represents three virtues: happiness (fuku), prosperity (roku), and longevity (ju). He is characterized by his elongated head with a white beard. Originally a Taoist deity from China, he is considered an incarnation of the Southern Pole Star.

5. Daikyoji Temple (Bishamonten)
Originally an Indian god of war, Bishamonten is believed to bring good fortune in competition. Also known as Tamonten, he is one of the Four Heavenly Kings and the guardian of the north. He holds a treasure staff (hoko) that generates wealth in his right hand and a pagoda that wards off disasters and invites good fortune in his left hand.

6. Shinshouin Temple (Benzaiten)
Benzaiten is the goddess of wisdom and treasure. She originates from the Hindu goddess Saraswati and is considered a water deity. She is also believed to bestow musical talent, eloquence, and wisdom.

7. Ryokanji Temple (Hotei)
Hotei is characterized by his generous smile and the bag he carries. He is said to have been a real Zen monk who lived in China during the late Tang dynasty and is considered an incarnation of Maitreya Bodhisattva.

The annual Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage is a wonderful opportunity to pray for good fortune in the new year while looking forward to enjoying beer and food. This year marks my third time since returning to Tokyo from Mexico, and two long-time friends have organized it for me. This event can be enjoyed in Shibamata, Tokyo, an area full of downtown charm.The Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage in Shibamata allows you to visit seven deities of good fortune that have been passed down since the Edo period. You can visit and receive blessings from Ebisu, Daikokuten, Bishamonten, Benzaiten, Hotei, Jurojin, and Fukurokuju.After the pilgrimage, it's a pleasure to relax with good local food and beer. There are many restaurants in the Shibamata area.I encourage everyone to experience the Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage in Shibamata and feel the warmth and history of the downtown area.
